Fiji Yasawa Islands
Fiji Yasawa Islands – The Wild Bunch
Fiji is a nation consisting of hundreds of islands and islets, each of which has its own unique charm. There are many groups of islands in Fiji that claim their fair share of tourists every year. Many of these resorts offer rest and relaxation; a way to keep civilization at arm’s length without giving up any modern conveniences. But none of its islands can claim the particular wild quality that the Fiji Yasawa Islands possess. The Yasawa Islands are a small group of islands, hardly discernible on a map of Fiji, but they pack a big punch when it comes to tourist appeal.
The Fiji Yasawa Islands are a group of about twenty islands. These islands are volcanic in origin, so they have a more mountainous terrain than is common in Fiji. These mountains make for some of the most majestic and unique views that Fiji has to offer, and the mountain hiking in the Yasawa Islands is unparalleled. These mountains give the islands its aura of wilderness, and it certainly helps that most of the Yasawas are still largely unspoiled by civilization. In fact, special permission needs to be given in order for anyone to visit any of the Yasawas besides its largest island, Tavewa.
Tavewa is the world’s portal to the Fiji Yasawa Islands. There are three budget resorts located in Tavewa, all of which provide a unique opportunity for its guests to taste the real Fiji. Since the Yasawa Islands are largely untouched by modern technology, the resorts here allow guests a peek into life as it truly is for most Fijians and Pacific Islanders. Electricity is only generated from sunset until around 10pm, after which campfires and lanterns are used to provide light. Tavewa is a popular destination for backpackers and other lovers of Fiji as nature intended it.
Yasawa Island, the eponymous island of the Fiji Yasawa Islands, boasts a luxury resort as well. It has a private airstrip that only serves the resort. Visitors to Yasawa Island can indulge in a variety of spa treatments, or take excursions to the beach, to other islands, or even to the Blue Lagoon Caves, made famous in the 1980 film starring Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins. You can also take a beach-hopper tour of the Yasawa Islands, taking high-speed catamarans from island to island, in order to get a feel for the Yasawa Islands as a whole.
